GIFT! GIFT! LITTLE CAESARS PROMOTION NETS MORE THAN $23,000 FOR ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
For Immediate Release: August 8, 2005
Greenville, SC By itself, fifty cents doesnt go very far in advancing the importance of organ and tissue donation. Over the course of four months and nearly 50,000 purchases of the Gift! Gift! Crazy Bread/Crazy Sauce combo, however, kidney recipient Bob Johns and patrons of his 13 Upstate Little Caesars locations turned pocket change into the largest single corporate charitable donation in the history of the South Carolina Gift of Life Trust Fund (GLTF).
Johns Gift! Gift! promotion, developed by Greenville-based cause-related marketing firm Just Right, LLC, concluded with more than $23,000 raised for the mission and programs of GLTF. During the promotion, Little Caesars customers purchased the Gift! Gift! combo for $1.00, $0.69 off the regular price. For each combo purchased, Johns donated fifty cents to GLTF.
We couldnt be any more pleased with the success of the Gift! Gift! promotion and truly owe a huge debt of gratitude to Bob Johns for his efforts on our behalf, says Connie Rinehart, Executive Director, GLTF. We went into this promotion with no idea of what the results would be, and very cautious expectations, and were just thrilled. This promotion has resulted in new capabilities to help the more than 700 South Carolinians on the waiting list for an organ transplant at any given time, and to raise awareness of the critical need for donors among our population in general.
Johns, a juvenile diabetes sufferer since the age of 14 who received a lifesaving kidney transplant in April 2004, says that for him, this increase in awareness has been the most rewarding result of the campaign.
Naturally, we are very pleased to have made this donation to GLTF and know what the influx of funds means to the organization, says Johns. But we also had the opportunity to educate hundreds of thousands of Upstate residents on the need for organ and tissue donors through the promotion, which is equally important. After having been on the waiting list for three years myself, I know how much getting the gift of life means, and Im glad I could share that with so many people through my restaurants.
In fact, Im now getting stopped at the grocery store, the drugstore, the dry cleaners to talk about my experiences and about organ donation in general. Each time this happens, I know thats one more person whos gotten the message, and that means a lot to me.
Johns battled through a variety of health problems to mount a highly successful career with his chain of Little Caesars, beginning with a location on Greenvilles Pleasantburg Drive in 1983. As he reached his early 50s, however, Johns kidneys began to fail, and he realized that both his family and his enterprisebuilt to employ several hundred workerswere at stake.
I knew that I might not live to see my children grow up, but also that if I died, all my employees would be at risk if anything happened to Little Caesars, Johns said as the Gift! Gift! promotion got underway in February. With everything I had been through, it was a frightening prospect, and the one thing over which I had no control. I could only wait.
Johns was placed on the waiting list for a donor kidney, and on the third call, three years later, he was given the gift of life. Johns made a full recovery, and is honoring the gift he received with a vow to help others get the same second chance at life.
Thanks to Bobs passion for and commitment to this cause, the Gift! Gift! campaign is just the beginning, says Just Right, LLC president Vicki Sharif. Were in the process of developing further promotions under the Buy to Give brand to raise money for GLTF through Bobs involvement and his restaurants, capitalizing on the momentum achieved through this campaign. Were very excited about the potential to impact hundreds of lives with Bobs help, and encourage everyone to keep their eyes and ears open for exciting developments from Bob, Little Caesars, and GLTF in the very near future.
